A VLAB VDM can comprise a number of different embedded target processors of a different types, each running the same or different OS, and a different target software build, executing concurrently as a multithreaded virtual machine on the desktop host. As of 2022, VLAB now fully supports RISC-V processors

With VLAB a user can easily set up, configure, launch, run, and use instances of a VLAB Virtual Development Machine (VDM) on their desktop. The Express edition is designed to enable a simple entry into virtualisation. A VLAB Essentials Express user can rapidly set up, launch, and use one or more VDMs on their desktop for development and test in an all in software virtual environment, either stand alone or using external or third party debug tools.

The VLAB Suite also adds advanced run time and interactive tools for software debug, profiling, analysis and test. Furthermore VDM workflow automation tools allow for agile and iterative development, integration, and testing. Some of the testing is only possible in a virtual environment and beyond the limitations of embedded hardware.
